Calculating Additional Revenue From Accelerated Environmental Permitting
Released: September 13, 2007
(Troutdale, OR, September 13, 2007) Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc,, the advanced-technology environmental consultants, provides a present value (PV) calculator on its web site (http://www.appl-ecosys.com/costcalc.php/) that demonstrates the financial benefits possible by accelerating environmental permitting. The calculator allows mining executives to look at the present value of the anticipated monthly mine revenue at two different time periods, and to vary the interest rate charged to ensure that future value.
By decreasing the time to a permitted and operational mine, the company not only realizes the monthly revenue stream sooner than otherwise, but concurrently decreases expenses associated with the prolonged permitting process. With mineral prices very high, companies and their investors can benefit greatly by quickly bringing projects on line. The on-line calculator permits rapid evaluation of the relative costs of different permitting periods.
Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc. provides the mineral and energy industries with its customized Mineral Property Suitability Advisor(SM) service, accelerated environmental permitting with its Eikos(SM) approach to quantifying subjectivity, its permit compliance management system, PermitWatch(SM), and the ability for companies to assure investors that reported mine values are presented transparently and without fraud with AssayWatch(SM).

Mineral Assay Result Transparency Benefits Companies, Investors
Released: September 3, 2007
(Troutdale, OR, September 3, 2007) Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc,, the advanced-technology environmental consultants, announces the availability of AssayWatch(SM), a mineral assay storage system that provides auditable and trustworthy reporting and transparency using a secure hosted application. The major benefit of AssayWatch is that no data can be surreptitiously changed to increase the apparent value of the company's properties. Once entered, data cannot be deleted. Changes can be made (for example, to correct a laboratory error) while the change, the reason for it, the name of the person making the change, and the date are all securely recorded in the system. This transparency assures investors that their decisions are based on sound data, and it allows exploration and mining companies to attract investors with confidence. The mining company can provide a link to the data on their own website.
The modern paradigm of environmental permitting provides agency managers with objective criteria on which to base their decisions. The procedures produce results that are technically sound, legally defensible, timely, and cost effective. The last factor is important as agency budgets are trimmed and staff asked to do more with less time and resources available to them. Of equal importance, the modern paradigm increases the quality of the environmental impact assessment while fully complying with all existing laws and regulations.
Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc. also provides the mineral and energy industries with its customized Mineral Property Suitability Advisor(SM) service, accelerated environmental permitting with its Eikos(SM) approach to quantifying subjectivity, and its permit compliance management system, PermitWatch(SM).

Objectively Rank Mineral Properties for Investment Suitability
Released: October 5, 2006
(Troutdale, OR, October 5, 2006) Mineral property investment and development decisions are critical to the growth and continuing success of mining companies. Assigning value and priority has been a major challenge because property evaluations are prepared by different assessors, at different times, for different purposes, for different clients, and under different regulatory requirements. Applied Ecosystem Services' Mineral Property Suitability Advisor(TM) quantifies and ranks evaluations using criteria aligned with their client's philosophy and acceptable risk levels. Decisions are easily explained and justified to shareholders and financial regulators.
The Suitability Advisor accommodates multiple objectives and multiple criteria. It uses the same robust core technologies as the FuzzyEI-Assessor(TM), also developed by Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc. to quantify the subjectivity inherent in environmental impact assessments. Mining company executives and directors can use the property comparison and ranking tool for both strategic planning and immediate decisions on opportunities that come to their attention.
All sectors of the mining industry can apply this tool to quantify their decision-making: metals (precious and base), energy (coal and uranium), industrial minerals, cut stone, construction aggregates. For those companies whose business interests include other natural resources (for example, oil and gas), the tool will accommodate differences in criteria and objectives. "Mining executives have been very successful in guiding their companies to greater wealth," says Dr. Shepard, the President of Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc., "and this tool can augment their experience and document sound decisions."

Book Explains Logic For Making Environmental Decisions
Breakthrough Approach Quantifies Subjectivity, Produces Better Results, Saves Time and Money
Released: February 8, 2005
Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc., an environmental risk management consultancy, announces the forthcoming publication of a breakthrough book that revolutionizes how environmental impact assessments are conducted. Written by Dr. Richard Shepard, president of the company and published by the premier science publisher, Springer-Verlag, Quantifying Environmental Impact Assessments Using Fuzzy Logic shows how to eliminate subjectivity, quantify values and beliefs, and allow decision-makers to reach better informed conclusions. Industries required to comply with environmental laws will save significant amounts of money and time while drastically reducing the risk of law suits challenging decisions.
Environmental impact assessments are required for a wide range of projects throughout the world. These assessments have increasingly involved complex, political decision making and incorporated values and beliefs of both stakeholders and interested parties. However, the results are often ineffective because values and beliefs are not easily quantifiable, and decisions are considered subjective. This book recognizes these problems and proposes practical methods based on fuzzy logic that will enable people preparing assessments to define terms and quantify opinions and input so that they are agreed upon by all involved parties. Fuzzy logic also quantifies the complex environmental, economic and social conditions that are present and are predicted by project alternatives. Shepard places special emphasis on the types of issues that frequently arise in NEPA environmental assessments and environmental impact statements and in similar regulations that are used in jurisdictions regionally (e.g., Oregon's Goal 5) and internationally. The new methods has the potential of saving billions of dollars in project startup costs, reduce the time to get permits and and facilitate job growth, while producing justifiable and legally defensible results with environmental responsibility.
"Fuzzy logic allows us to quantify subjective concepts and beliefs and apply rigorous mathematics to support a good and fair decision", Shepard said. Moreover, Shepard notes that, "this modern approach allows every stakeholder group a fair and equitable opportunity to contribute their opinions and values to the process." These values are converted to a list of all environmental, social and economic components that are ranked in importance by consensus. Important components are used to calculate an environmental condition index for the existing situation as well as projected future situations under various project alternatives. The result is a ranked listing of the existing and alternative environments that is technically sound and legally defensible. An audit trail documents how each final value was calculated. No company or project will ever want to conduct an environmental analysis or assessment without using this new and modern approach.
