Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc. has been involved in every aspect of permitting under NEPA, CWA, ESA, Rivers and Harbors Act, and many state equivalents. We are a highly regarded environmental consulting firm for agriculture, forestry, mining, and energy production and transportation clients in the US and internationally. This experience has taught us that effective environmental assistance is no longer a simple extension of normal business and technical skills. The interrelationship of international, federal, state, and local environmental interests, together with the changing technology and economics of the sector, requires a new level of sophistication to protect the interests of our clients. Applied Ecosystem Services combines natural resource industry knowledge with experience in governmental environmental policy and negotiation to ensure that the interests of our clients are protected and their futures better assured.

The firm's role varies with each client's particular needs and preferences. However, our goal is, and has consistently been, to protect a client's interests wherever necessary: in negotiations with a regulatory or resource agency or a state, county, or local government; providing written and oral testimony to Congress and state legislatures; as technical expert witness in the federal or state courts; in explaining projects to the public, and in quantifying subjectivity inherent in environmental statutes and regulations.

We have learned through experience that clear, compelling, and effective communications is as important (and sometimes more important) than technical expertise. The natural environment is complex and cannot accurately be reduced to sound bites. Too many people fail to appreciate how dynamic these systems are so they view all change as bad. However, most change is neutral in effect and, with the proper approach to a project, can be beneficial to the physical environment and the organisms that live in it.
